ALERT! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! Comics are HERE on Substack!!!
It’s the first “CDoS” (Comics Day on Substack), and woooowweeeee there’s a lot of comics and news to sift through.
Today, a bumper crop of new comics became available on Substacks, including:
new stuff from Jeff Lemire and “Black Hammer,”
Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren’s “Black Cloak” opening chapter,
announcements from James Tynion IV and Act One of “The Closet” by Tynion, Gavin Fullerton, Chris O’Halloran, and Tom Napolitano,
a preview of “Vanish” #1 from Kids Love Chains creators Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Sonia Oback, and John J. Hill,
the first chapter of “Shadoweyes for Good” by Sophie Campbell,
Chip Zdarsky’s “Public Domain” first chapter posted for all, along with tons of Zdarsky shout-outs and an announcement about Mangasplaining Extra,
a huge batch of 3 Worlds/3 Moons announcements, along with the 12-page RUINS by Jonathan Hickman, Mike del Mundo, and Mike Huddleston,
and “cut scenes” from Molly Knox Ostertag’s GLAAD-nominated “Girl from the Sea.”
And meanwhile, some really exciting new Substacks comics projects were announced, covered by Entertainment Weekly, Polygon, CBR, and of course, Multiversity, along with press pieces, previews, and interviews like Elsa Charretier on David Harper’s SKTCHD, . Here’s a list with links so can you substackscribe:
Tom King and Elsa Charretier’s new romance comic “Love Everlasting” which will be available free, with perks for paid supporters;
Grant Morrison’s “In Xanaduum” which is “high concept sci-fi ghost story with a sting in the tail and a big autobiographical element!” which sounds like something both initially inscrutable and ultimately wonderful, like all their works;
Khary Randolph and Joanne Starer’s Glass Eye Studios and the two upcoming books, “Sirens of the City” and “A Way from Here” by Starer and GABO, with story pages for free and bonus content for paid subscribers;
Jen Bartel featuring art tutorials, Q+As, process pieces, etc.
“Spectators” by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Hendrikon, which looks to explore sex and violence but otherwise stays a mystery from these creators of “Pride of Baghdad,” and
the aforementioned Mangasplaining Extras which will feature translations of works from mangaka like Taiyo Matsumoto and Susumu Higa, as well as extra stuff from the crew behind the superdope podcast with Deb Aoki (who leads this project with Andrew Woodrow-Butcher and Christopher Woodrow-Butcher), as well as David Brothers and Chip Zdarsky.
(And yup, your humble schoolteacher covering-Substacks-here-on-this-Substack-but not-sponsored-by-Substack has paid for subscriptions to all of these in order to provide in-depth reviews and coverage right here!)
Finally, another apology that I haven’t posted here in a while. Thanks again for y’all supporters and subscribers for your patience and kind words. The past season has been challenging, mostly with all the challenges that the omicron wave has introduced to the work of public school teaching. I can’t say we’re out of the woods yet…
But with my schedule settling into some more regular rhythms, I’m aiming to soon review all those new comics up above, as well as the recent cool comics from Copper Bottle like “STARSIGNS” and “TERROR WAR,” ND Stevenson’s regular diary comics posts, the latest from Lemire’s “Fishflies,” Molly Ostertag’s amazing “DARKEST NIGHT,” and lots of other Substacks comics goodness.
And the bi-weekly (until we reach the threshold of paid supporters to go weekly) “Comics Syllabus podcast” will continue looking at comics in and out of the Substack comics world, including upcoming reviews of Scott Snyder’s Comixology projects and other graphic novels and new print comics.
Hear from us soon…
Happy Lunar New Year. And Happy CDoS!
